DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER

MINISTER OF TOURISM, CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT, SABAH

Greetings,

First of all, I wish to thank the State Government for entrusting me to spearhead this important role as the Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah. As a new Minister in the new government, it can be a daunting task to undertake the heavy responsibilities and pertinent issues at hand. However, I will take it upon myself to ensure that the Ministry’s current procedures will not be disrupted but where change is due, I shall ensure that it will be to the benefit of our people.

Even though I am new to this Ministry, I have been following the tourism scenario in the State. One cannot fail to notice the booming industry and the presence of the Chinese and Korean tourists walking in town. However, Sabah is a large State, in fact the second biggest in the country with such diverse offerings be it nature, adventure, culture and local cuisine. There are more to discover, not only on the west coast, but particularly the east coast of Sabah. There are certainly work to be done, and tourism products to introduce and improved. I shall work closely with Sabah Tourism Board to further raise our tourism profile and continue to ensure the industry remains vibrant and sustainable.

This Ministry is not only responsible for tourism but culture and most importantly environment. The presence of Sabah Parks, Wildlife Department and Environment Protection Department within this Ministry clearly spells out the State’s reputation of being a hotspot for conservation. I believe that we have a collective responsibility towards understanding, protecting and preserving this incredible wealth of nature for our future generation. These must be done through education and a sense of appreciation.

Sabah is also known for her rich cultural heritage. The tapestry of traditions, myths, legends and diverse cultural values has allowed us to live peacefully and in harmony. I aim for Sabah Museum and Sabah Cultural Board to play a bigger role in inculcating awareness for the people. Let us share and continue to respect and appreciate each other’s traditions and beliefs.

Am sure the senior officials and staff of the Ministry and all its agencies are geared up to the task of this nation building, and I am privileged to be part of this new exciting chapter for Sabah. However, we will not succeed if we do not have the support of the tourism industry players, NGOs, and the relevant bodies in the State. You can determine where we are heading next. Therefore, I encourage you to suggest and bring forward any constructive comments for our attention and to make this Ministry a working ministry for the People of Sabah.

Thank you.

YB. DATUK CHRISTINA LIEW
