RM23,000 cash awaits fishing tourney champs

Kota Kinabalu: Over RM23,000 in cash prizes awaits anglers in the Sabah International Fishing Tournament 2014 which will flag off at Sutera Harbour Marina and Country Club, here, on April 3-6. The four-day tournament will see some 200 anglers from all over the State and neighbouring regions competing in individual format compared to past years where the tournament was observing a team format. According to Sabah Anglers Association President, Datuk Wilfred Lingham, this year the organisers (Sabah Anglers Association) decided to hold the tournament in individual format to make for a fairer competition for the participants. "In previous years, we organised this competition in team format and we found that it will be more fair for the anglers if we change the format to individual. "Out of the total participation, we are also expecting several participants from Penang and also some from neighbouring countries however the final participants list has yet to be confirmed," he said. Lingham said this during a press conference which was held at Sutera Harbour Marina and Country Club on Thursday, adding that the tournament will also feature a special Heaviest Billfish prize of RM2,000. "First place will be taking home RM6,000, second place will take home RM5,000 and third place will take home RM4,000," said Lingham, adding that fourth place will take home RM3,000, fifth place will take RM2,000 and sixth place will take home RM1,000. There will also be other cash prizes including RM500 for seventh place and RM300 for eighth to 12th place winners. "The tournament will flag off at 9am on April 3 and all participants must return to Sutera Harbour Marina on April 6 at 3pm, followed by the prize presentation ceremony at 5pm," Lingham added. The Sabah International Fishing Tournament 2014 is being co-sponsored by TCE Tackles which provides over RM10,000 worth of angling goods and lucky draw prizes, Sutera Harbour Marina and Country Club as venue host as well as the Department of Fisheries. "We will be observing local rules together with the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) rules and the tournament practices 'catch and release' for all billfish caught while catching of rays and sharks are banned," said Lingham. Meanwhile, two weeks after the Sabah International Fishing Tournament, Sabah Anglers association will be heading to Labuan to co-organise the Labuan International Fishing Tournament (LIFT) which will be held on April 23-27. LIFT 2014 is being co-organised by the Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia Labuan and Sabah Anglers Association in conjunction with the Malaysia Water Festival and Visit Malaysia Year 2014. For more information on both tournaments, please contact Sabah Anglers Association members Richard (019 8818015), Chris (019 8929254) or Zachary (013 8504007) while registration forms are available at the Sabah Tourism Board, Sri Pelancongan Sabah as well as most fishing and tackle shops in Kota Kinabalu and Sutera Harbour Marina and Country Club. Sabah should adopt ‘Bizarre Borneo’ Tagline, says Vice Chancellor

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah should adopt the 'Bizarre Borneo' tagline, which emphasises the uniqueness of Borneo and Sabah to promote sustainable eco-tourism. University College Sabah Foundation Vice Chancellor Prof Ghazally Ismail said eco-tourists who come to Sabah are more interested in the information behind the rich ecosystem that is sustaining the flora and fauna on the island than the opportunity to see them live. "I once brought a group of tourists to watch turtles. But when we arrived, it was raining and because turtles do not like wet sands, they did not show up. "I apologised to the tourists but to my surprise they said they did not mind. They were just happy to know that the turtles are here, that we are doing our best to conserve and protect the species," said Ghazally. Therefore, he added, it is crucial to supply as much information as possible on the uniqueness and bizarre properties of all the wildlife in Sabah since those information would become the biggest tourist assets besides the existing assets such as the orang-utans and the crocodiles. "Improving knowledge is key. Nature-based tourism must help people to understand the link between natural and cultural heritage and promote understanding and appreciation of the environment by the provision of quality information and interpretation," he said. The ecosystem on the island is very diverse, added Ghazally, with many of the flora and fauna can only be found on the island (endemic). "There are 15,000 species of plants here and 6,000 are endemic. If you want to know what is so impressive about that, the whole of New Zealand has only 2,500 species of higher plants. "We have 3,000 species of plants, 265 species of dipterocarps (hardwood) and out of these, 155 species are endemic. We have 2,000 species of orchids, 16 species of Rafflesia, all endemic to Sabah," he said. The island of Borneo also has 288 species of terrestrial mammals, 102 species of bats, 61 species of rats and mice, 91 species of marine mammals, 600 species of birds with 30 endemic species, 639 species of ants, 394 species of freshwater fish, 150 species of frogs and 195 species of lizards. Ghazally continued that the diversity of the island can be showcased by the fact that one could find 700 species of trees in a ten-hectare plot of land. "This equals the total number of tree species in Canada and United States, combined," he said. Studies on the island's biodiversity have intensified over the past decades that scientists have been able to discover three new species every month for the past ten years. The most recent study includes the rediscovery of micro-frog, long believed to have extinct, in Kubah National Park, Sarawak almost four years ago. "An example of 'Bizarre Borneo' tourism is the spectacular two-hour bat show in Sarawak. Platforms are built for tourists to sit down and watch almost two million blind bats flying in long spiralling streams to spend the night hunting for insects," said Ghazally. The acclaimed writer also hailed the construction of canopies built over the rainforests in Sabah, attributing the increased discoveries of new species to the move. According to Ghazally, the canopies have helped scientists and environmental researchers studied the natures of flora and fauna and solved countless unanswered questions such as how some insects mate or survive. "You would think that frogs are only found near water. But when studies were first conducted after the canopies were built, we found many species of frogs living on trees and they are nowhere near any water," he said. Other unique species that can be found on Borneo are little mushrooms that turn ants into zombies, sucking fish Gastromyzon borneensis with all 36 members of the genus endemic to Borneo, Bornean flat-headed frog that has no lungs and love dart slugs. "Those are the bizarre things about Borneo which I think we can turn into tourist attractions. Never mind if tourists come here and did not see a thing. They will be satisfied to know that, deep in the forests, these species are protected by us, harboured these bizarre things for the next generations. "They will go home satisfied. They will tell their friends, 'Go to Borneo. Research had been done there, areas have been protected. Go there, support their tourism so that it's sustainable'," he said. Source: Daily Express

Briton returns to Sabah to honour late father

KOTA KINABALU: Christopher Knowles was only a child when his father, Robert Knowles (O.B.E.), moved their family of four to North Borneo – now Sabah – to assume the position of Assistant Commissioner of Trade and Customs in 1947. Although the Knowles family left for Singapore en route to the United Kingdom months later, Robert returned to North Borneo alone the year after to resume his position in Kota Kinabalu, known then as Jesselton. Forty seven years later, Knowles Jr made a visit to Sabah, this time together with his wife, Angela Knowles, to join Sabahans in honouring his late father, through the ‘North Borneo Sacred Legacy Photographic Exhibition VI: Robert Knowles Collection, at the Sabah Museum, here yesterday. The exhibition was launched yesterday by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun and will be held from February 18 to May 18. Robert Knowles (O.B.E.) worked for the Customs in North Borneo from 1947 until he retired as the Regional Controller of Trade and Customs in 1963. His work had brought him to many parts of Sabah, during which he put his love for photography to good use. His hobby in photography had enabled North Borneo’s post-war recovery, rehabilitation and growth along with its diverse culture and beauty of nature to be captured and preserved in a photographic documentation that is integral to Sabah’s cultural and heritage preservation. In his launching speech yesterday, Masidi pointed out how the state’s diverse culture and beauty of nature had even then inspired Knowles to capture and document these assets, despite the post-war condition of the state back then. These assets, he said, continue to make Sabah a unique destination and attract tourists from everywhere. He urged the museum fraternity as well as others to utilise their photography skills to immortalise the state’s legacy which will benefit the future generation. Sabah Museum Department director Joanna Kitingan disclosed that Robert Knowles had contributed a total of 2,200 film negatives containing diverse images of North Borneo from 1947 to 1965, taken by Knowles through his lens, which he developed and printed himself at his home. Due to space constraints, only 120 odd photographs covering people, events, places, buildings, boats, locomotives, and various economic activities have been selected for the exhibition at the Sabah Museum.
