Sabah Ministry Working Closely With ESSCom To Protect Wildlife

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 12 (Bernama) -- Sabah's Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry through the Wildlife Department is working closely with the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) as well as other security agencies to protect wildlife in the state especially in preventing smuggling of wildlife, the Sabah State Assembly was told, Wednesday. Its minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said as a result of the cooperation including with the Marine Operations Force (MOF) and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) since ESSCom was formed in April last year, five arrests were made by the MOF involving an attempt to smuggle out 23,000 turtle eggs. "In the latest incident in the waters off Pulai Si Amil, Semporna last August, a foreigner was caught by MMEA for being in possession of 72.4kg of turtle meat and turtle shells, he said when replying to a question from Edwin Bosi (PKR-Kapayan) during debate and the state's 2015 Budget. Masidi said that investigations into the latest case had been completed and that the suspect was expected to be charged soon. He told the state assembly that his ministry through the Wildlife Department had not discontinued investigations into the death of 14 elephants in the Gunung Rara Forest Reserve in January last year and that the reward of RM120,000 to bring the culprits to book still stood. On another matter, Masidi said the authorities viewed sternly foreigners operating as tour guides in the state and that a one such case involving a South Korean national had been referred to the Immigration Department for further action. Chinese, Japanese Tourists In 24 Chartered Flights To Sabah

KOTA KINABALU, Nov 10 (Bernama) -- Sabah will be expecting 24 chartered flights carrying tourists from South Korea and Japan at the end of the year. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said this, in response to a question from Datuk Au Kam Wah (BN-Elopura), at the State Legislative Assembly here today. He said 20 of the flights, from South Korea, would be bringing in 3,000 visitors between Dec 23, 2014 and Jan 3, 2015. The remaining four flights would be bringing in 1,030 visitors from Japan between Dec 30, 2014 and Jan 3, 2015. "I have been made to understand that Sabah would be receiving four chartered Malaysia Airlines flights from China and two from Taipei next year, in conjunction with Chinese New Year," he said. Masidi said despite the terrorist intrusion in Tanduo, Lahad Datu and kidnapping incidents, tourist arrival from other destinations except China, had recorded an increase. In the first eight months of the year, the number of tourists from South Korea was 83,031, while from Japan, 26,673, an increase of 18.7 per cent and 27.7 per cent respectively, compared to the same period last year. He said the same period recorded 21,103 Australian tourists and 56,646 European tourists, an increase of 3.4 per cent and 13.1 per cent respectively. Masidi attributed the growth to the strategies and efforts undertaken by the ministry through the Sabah Tourism Board to offset the negative incidents. In 2013, visitors from China represented 33.1 per cent of the state's total international tourist arrival. Between January and April, tourists from China numbered 153,768, compared to 103,917 in the same period last year, an increase of 48 per cent. However, the figure plunged by 37 per cent following the terrorist intrusion and kidnappings.   Source: Bernama

Not so taken aback over turtle deaths

SEMPORNA: People have been lukewarm about the killing of sea turtles although it is an endangered species, said Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming. He said the issue of irresponsible parties killing the turtles to be smuggled out of Sabah to a neighbouring country this year did not receive widespread attention from the public, unlike the issue of elephant deaths. He urged the relevant authorities, particularly tourism industry players and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) to expand awareness about sea turtles in the West Coast, for example, in Banggi, Kudat. This would give an opportunity to the community in the West Coast, to see and know the turtles and indirectly express a love for and the need to protect endangered species. "Once we have known the species, we would be sure to love it and automatically there will arise efforts to protect the animals," he said on Mabul Island, Tuesday. Pang was speaking after a turtles welcoming programme at Mabul Island by Borneo Divers. Also present was the Borneo Divers and Sea Sports Chief Executive Officer Datuk Edmund Looh and Semporna Assistant District Officer Suhaime @ Suhaimi Ejip. He was proud that Mabul-Sipadan was recognised by the United States as the world's number one dive centre with a succesful environmental governance. "This recognition is certainly very welcome because it proves that the Government's efforts in the past 12 years had finally paid off not only in the conservation of the ecosystem, but also in gaining international recognition. "Although at first, the Government's decision to close the resort and limit tourists to 120 people at a time at a time was not well received, the action has proven to conserve the marine ecosystem," he said. Pang also revealed that Tun Sakaran Marine Park will be opened in Banggi and gazetted in the near future, possibly next year. Earlier, in his remarks Admund stated that efforts to maintain and protect the sea turtle is a shared responsibility because the animal has been likened to a human family as their existence at Mabul Island and its surrounding areas was from very long ago. He hoped the "Celebration of Sea Turtles in Mabul" for three days starting from Nov 3 will bring awareness to preserve and conserve the marine life as well as the cleanliness of the sea.
