China documentary series to promote Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Some 32 children from different parts of China will be coming to Sabah to shoot a documentary series entitled ‘Youth of China 3 – Nanyang Classroom’ this August. The series is co-produced by China Central Television (CCTV) and Dino Brandwork. The Chinese youths will be shooting eight episodes in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor and Sabah from August 1 to 21 this year. Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Satta) president Datuk Seri Winston Liaw said four of the eight episodes would be filmed in Sabah over a period of 11 days. “The places where the filming will take place include Kota Kinabalu, Kudat , Kundasang, Ranau, Tenom and Keningau,” he said. CCTV producer Chen Shiyue, Malaysian producer Dino Goh, Joshua Lai and Liaw paid a courtesy call on Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai yesterday. Liaw said Yeo would also be included in the filming process depicting the Mayor showing the children how to navigate Kota Kinabalu city on a bicycle. “This is to promote Kota Kinabalu City Hall’s free bicycle sharing concept,” he said. The programme is targeted to go on-air in December this year. The CCTV channel running the ‘Youth of China 3 -Nanyang Classroom’ programme has a viewership of 500 million viewers, both on-air TV and digital presence. Liaw said the filming in Sabah was a good opportunity for CCTV to promote Sabah. “We, as a tourism industry non-governmental organization (NGO), will assist them in their needs,” he said. Doodle to hold Conteng-Bah here July 22

Kota Kinabalu: Doodle Malaysia will be organising Conteng-Bah!, an event that celebrates creative products and services in arts and crafts of Sabahan entrepreneurs and artists. Scheduled to be held at Riverson Mall Sabah from July 22-23 from 10am until 10pm, the event aims to create a linkage between Sabahan art with the world. It is also brought together by Hive Studio and Jesselton Artisan Market and sponsored by the mall with support from UMS, KK Jazz festival, Sabah Institute of Art, and Sabah Tourism. Doodle community will have a meet-and-greet session and showcase all their talents and creativity in a physical space instead of the usual Facebook community page. Various activities, performances and vendors will light up the event. Jesselton Artisan Market would bring 70 SMEs and artist vendors participation. Conteng-Bah! vendors appeal to both children and adults, offering merchandises, homemade products, and artistic works. There will be family-friendly activities and programs from Tha' Doodict Collision Art Battle, Art Exhibition by Persatuan Seni Visual Sabah, Seeds, Healing Arty and amazing numbers of workshops ranging from Colouring by Marty Woods, Watercolour by Jerome Liew, and Zentangle by Sarah Salim, all for children and adults alike. There will also be a special Colors & Senses workshop by Doodict Group for deaf children to be conducted with Dr Pamela Yong, a Seeds fellow. Property market in KK booming thanks to tourism, private investments: Sabah minister

KOTA KINABALU: Rising private investments and expansion of tourism industry in Sabah's real estate sector have led to a booming property market in Kota Kinabalu. State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Hajiji Noor said the market had been resilient between 2008 and 2014. “Over the past years, economic activities have remarkably improved since the implementation of Sabah development corridor projects, especially those related to tourism. “The strategy under the tourism development is to target high-yield and long-stay visitors,” he said during the ground-breaking ceremony of Titijaya Land Berhad’s The Shore project here. Hajiji added that the government also aimed to address property affordability via the “Malaysian My Second Home” scheme and had established an immigration office to facilitate registrations. Meanwhile, on The Shore, which is Titijaya’s first project in the East Malaysia, will be completed by 2022. Titijaya deputy group managing director Lim Poh Yit said the 25-storey serviced residence with 561 units has a gross development value of RM575 million. The selling price starts from RM453,000 per unit with build-up sizes ranging from 409 to 541 square feet. To date, the take-up rate of the sales is more than 50 per cent. Source: New Straits Times

Sabah preferred destination for big bikers

Kota Kinabalu: Numerous big biker events held in the State over the past years shows Sabah has become a preferred destination for bikers. The latest being the Kota Kinabalu International Bike Week 2017 which will be held for the first time in Sabah from Sept 29 to Oct 1 at the Tanjung Aru rugby field. The three-day event organised by Bikers Garage, in collaboration with Harley Owners Group North Borneo, estimates an attendance of between 2,000 and 3,000 bikers of all categories, not only from Sabah but also from across Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, the Philippines, China, Japan, Thailand and Europe. They also estimate between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors to show up at the event which is open to the public with no entrance fee. This was announced during a media conference with Sabah Tourism Board Chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai as invited guest of honour, here, Saturday. Bangkuai, who represented Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, applauded the event as one of the new attractions for Sabah, adding to the many varieties of tourism activities that have brought the name of Sabah to the eyes of the world. "This is the kind of initiatives that we are looking for from our local communities, not only it brings in international participants but also introduces the bike ride activity as one of the possible tour packages that our local travel agencies could look into. "Our terrains in Sabah are not only adventurous and fun but also safe at the same time for any type of bikes, especially the big bikes like Harley Davidson," Bangkuai added. He said the State Government is also very supportive of the event and has agreed to put it in the annual event in the Sabah Tourism calendar starting this year. "As support, Sabah Tourism Board also contributed RM10,000 to the event. It is a small amount but shows we are with them and we will continue to support the event because we see the potential." He went on to say that big bikers is an elite group, because not many people can afford to buy big bikes that cost some more than RM200,000. "We view them as high-end tourists who will come together with their family and will spend about a couple of days in a week, and this will contribute to our economy," he said. Meanwhile, Datuk Yakub Khan, patron for the unfolding of yet another exciting Bike Week in the region, said the event will begin on Friday morning with more than 60 booths selling motorcycle accessories and apparels, parts and merchandise from local and international vendors. There will also be 20 food and beverage booths. He said there will also be stunts performed by a professional motorcycle stuntman from Indonesia, Wawan Tembong, as well as live entertainment by artistes like Ramli Sarip and up and coming Sabahan artistes. Custom Bike Contest for hardcore enthusiasts, logo creating competition and fun traditional games will also be held during the event. As part of the promotional drive for the event, they will also working with Kupi Kupi FM96.3, a local radio station, as their official radio station. "During the event, Kupi Kupi FM is also celebrating our International Coffee Day for the first time on Oct 1. There will be a lot of activities lined up, we will also bring in our local coffee brands, it will be a day to celebrate not only Bike Week but also Coffee Day," said its Programme Manager, Lester Calvin Miol. Borneo International Harley Owners Group (HOG) Rally, organised by Harley Owners Group Kuala Lumpur Chapter, has also confirmed participation by more than 100 bikers across the nation. Miss Sabah Tourism to adopt different approach

KOTA KINABALU: For the second year running, renowned property developer SG Group presents the Miss Sabah Tourism pageant, with Poise Productions as the main organiser. Serving as a platform to promote tourism, culture and friendship among delegates, appointed State Director of Miss Sabah Tourism Organisation, Weena Marcus, said the pageant this year will adopt a different approach to promote local tourist attractions to the world. “This year, we decided not to do conventional beauty pageant activities where the girls visit sponsors. “Instead, we will be producing three travelogue episodes in line with our slogan, ‘Promoting Tourism, Culture and Friendship.’” Weena elaborated that the first episode will highlight tourist attractions in the State, the second to promote cultures in the Land Below the Wind and the third to foster goodwill among the contestants. She revealed that the travelogue will first be made available for public viewing during the pageant grand final on August 11 at Hakka Hall, and will thereafter be released on social media for target groups out of Sabah.
