Sabah owes much to Agnes Keith

Sandakan: Renowned American author, Agnes Newton Keith had contributed much to North Borneo's (Sabah) global fame through her writings. Permanent Secretary to the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Datu Rosmadi Datu Sulai said Keith's meticulous depiction of the locals through her books were also recognised when she received the Best Non-Fiction Award in 1939. "As such, we are thankful for the socio-anthropological documentation by Keith in her books," Rosmadi said when officiating the Agnes Keith Day and the Craft Exotica at the Agnes Keith House, here, on Thursday. According to him, the State Government with the cooperation of the National Museum and Antiquity Department had repaired Keith's house here and opened it officially in 2004. Rosmadi said the challenge of continuing Keith's studies on local customs falls on the young generation. "We should be proud as the State is still rich with customs which have not been studied fully." Agnes Keith and her family faced a difficult life during the Japanese occupation from 1942-1945 where she was detained in Pulau Berhala, Sandakan and the Batu Lintang Prison, Sarawak. Her experiences led her to write two more books after 'Land Below the Wind' – 'Three Came Home' and 'White Man Returns' which retold her story while being a prisoner of war and living with the locals upon returning to Sandakan after the war ended. In 1952, Agnes Keith left Sandakan to follow her husband Harry Keith to the Philippines as the United Nations' representative. A total of 7,265 tourists – 4,798 locals, 2,147 foreign visitors and 270 students visited the Agnes Keith House this year. The Agnes Keith Day and the Craft Exotica was co-organised by the Sandakan Municipal Council and the State Museum Department. Among the activities during the celebration are free tour of the house and traditional sports as well as exhibition of various crafts by the Brunei community in the district and the Dusun from Keningau. "We should be proud as we are still rich with crafts from various ethnic groups where their market should be expanded. "Traditional sports too are beginning to witness a decrease in attention among the young generation due to mobile virtual games… traditional sports are merely for exhibitions now," he said. He also urged local tourism players to be more aggressive and proactive to promote tourist destinations in Sabah which augurs well with the development of the tourism sector. "Local entrepreneurs should also produce creative and innovative crafts which are tourist convenient," he said. Also present were Sabah Museum Department Director Sintiong Gelet and Sandakan Municipal Council president's representative Peter Stephen Ampadu. - Mardinah Jikur Source : Daily Express

Malindo to bring in more China tourists

Kota Kinabalu: Malindo Air is about to link Sabah with 10 destinations in China via direct flights for the summer season, thus bringing in more Chinese tourists. Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming, said the new flights involve Beijing (four times a week), Chengdu (three times a week) and Changsa (three times a week), from July 14, July 12 and Sept. 1, this year. "All this while, we have been working on chartered flights, especially during the Chinese New Year festival and the summer season (July & August). "However, when the response turns good, the chartered flights will be turned into scheduled ones. Once the market is matured enough and Sabah is well-known enough, then airlines are more confident to take up scheduled flights," he said, at the inaugural meeting between the Vice-President of All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, Qiao Wei, and Sabah's Chinese leaders. Pang said, Malindo Air has also been allocated 93 chartered flights to Sabah for two months (July and August) from eight cities, namely Zhengzhou (17), Wuxi (13), Ningbo (13), Chongxing (8), Wenzhou (13), Changsha (10), Xuzhou (10) and Xian (9). "The figure (93) does not include the seven weekly flights from Beijing and Chengdu as these two destinations are starting scheduled flights to Sabah beginning July," he added. According to Pang, China gave the foreign airline eight destinations for chartered flights and Malindo Air chose to fly to Sabah from all those destinations. "That is something extraordinary for Malindo Air which has been helping the Sabah Tourism Board to promote Sabah. On behalf of Sabah Tourism Board, I wish to express our sincere appreciation to Malindo Air for working with us so well and for considering Sabah-China connectivity as their priority," he said. By the same token, the Assistant Minister said the relations between Malaysia and China are becoming increasingly better as reflected in the influx of tourists. "Minister Datuk Masidi has given us a very high target of half a million tourists from the China market itself. I know it is very tough. It's very challenging because we do not have enough hotel rooms, especially resorts. While we have upcoming hotels in the city, we want more resorts to come up in Sabah." On the same note, Pang said there is a possibility of reviving the Tianjin-Sabah route which was stopped some time ago due to operational matters. "It is likely for Malindo Air to re-mount the route, also in July. Tianjin has a population of about 20 million and combined with Beijing's population, we have 40 million people out there…that is a huge market," he said. - Mary Chin Source: Daily Express

Its chairperson, Sofia Johari, said slides and video presentations would be screened at the Bavang Jamal KTCS Education Centre around 5pm prior to the release. "This time, an estimated 100 hatchlings will be released from one nest," she said. Since 2012, Sofia said KTCS has released around 4,500 hatchlings. "The rate of hatching is 85 per cent on average for each nest," she added. The public are welcome to witness the release of the sea turtle hatchlings. Conversation fee will be collected for the maintenance of KTCS turtle hatchery - RM 5 per adult or RM 3 for children or students. Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang, who is also Tanjong Kapor Assemblyman, praised KTCS for their effort in conserving and improving sea turtle populations. Founded by Roland Agansai and Francesca Winfield in 2011, KTCS is working with other stakeholders in Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) to conserve and improve sea turtle populations in the park, the largest marine park in Malaysia and one of the largest in Southeast Asia. The society is also working with other local community based organisations (CBOs), non-governmental organisations (NGOs), resorts, tour operators, universities, district authorities and enforcement agencies in mainstreaming turtle conservation-related events and activities in Kudat, therefore supporting the management of natural resources in TMP that is being led by Sabah Parks. The long-term objective of KTCS is to establish 50 community managed turtle conservation areas within the Park, and to promote turtle conservation-based tourism within this area. KTCS is working on increasing the involvement of coastal communities in environmental conservation programmes. These programmes include capacity building in turtle hatchery and conservation management, sustainable livelihood programmes such as eco-tourism, coral planting, eco-farming, waste management and conducting environmental awareness programs.
