British govt shows interest in Sabah’s tourism, energy sectors

Kota Kinabalu: The British Government has shown an interest in investing in the tourism sector and energy industry in Sabah, said State opposition leader Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin.
However, Lajim who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah Chairman said there are concerns over security in the State.

“British High Commissioner to Malaysia Vicki Treadell invited me to an official meeting at her office in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 30. Many aspects of Sabah were discussed in the 45-minute meeting in the presence of the Commission’s Political and Economic Counsellor Matthew Deith.

“They saw huge potentials for investments in Sabah’s tourism and energy industries and showed interest in putting in their money in the two sectors.

“But they are concerned about kidnapping cases and the presence of refugees in Sabah,” he said to reporters at the party’s headquarters here on Wednesday.

Nonetheless, Lajim said he assured Treadell and Deith that there is no need to worry over safety and security in Sabah as both are under control.

He said the British officials also expressed concern over political instability in the country.

To Treadell’s question on Internet access in rural areas, Lajim said some schools in the interior have insufficient facilities including the Internet which is being addressed by the ruling government.

Meanwhile on Sabah DAP’s new line-up, Lajim said PKR Sabah would continue to work together with the new main committee under the name of DAP and Pakatan Harapan (PH) so as to achieve its main aim and mission to win in the upcoming 14th General Election.

“As the opposition leader in Sabah, I hope that new line-up of Sabah DAP will be united as our objective is the same which is to win the coming general election and to claim the rights of Sabah people from the Federal Government.

“We also do not deny that DAP has a strong hold in Sabah especially in areas that have many Tionghua people,” he said.
