Colours of Borneo’ wins contest

Kudat: The unique creation of Joanna Datuk Kitingan, an amateur fashion designer, won the hearts of the judges in the recent Creative Modern Ethnic Design Competition.
Named Colours of Borneo, the intricately-designed evening wear is based on the Murut traditional costume featuring a beadwork pattern.

It was paraded by local model Dymphna Edwin Gustin who was also adjudged as the best model.

Kitingan’s entry clinched the gold award which carried with it RM1,800 cash, a trophy and a certificate.

“In fact, over the years, I have been designing my own clothes using the ethnic motif as an identity of Sabah’s culture.

“Through my participation, I am making a statement about what it means to dress modestly, yet elegant and practical, which can be worn from office to a dinner function, be it formal or informal,” said the first-timer.

Runner-up was designer Roslinah Bastim, followed by Sham Shahril Sali, who won the silver and bronze awards respectively.

On hand to give away the prizes was Assistant Minister of Industrial Development, Datuk Bolkiah Ismail.

The ethnic design competition was organised by Datuk Cobra Jeffry in conjunction with the Kudat Festival 2015 held at the Kudat Sidek Esplanade, here.

The Kudat Festival was officially launched by Minister of Special Duties, Datuk Teo Chee Kang on behalf of Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Aman.
