Felda unveils four-star hotel Grand Borneo in Kota Kinabalu

KOTA KINABALU: The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) moves a step forward with the ownership of a four-star hotel in Sabah – Hotel Grand Borneo – to increase the accommodation facilities in this city.

The launch of the hotel yesterday is a good indication of the state of the tourism industry in Sabah.

Felda chairman Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad said Hotel Grand Borneo, which began operations in November 2009, was acquired by Felda on June 1 this year.

“In this regard, it is my pleasure to announce that Hotel Grand Borneo, owned by Felda, offers comfortable accommodation and also at comfortable rate.

“We believe the acquisition (of the hotel) will bring in profit to Felda although it will take time.

“This is because the tourism industry in Sabah is still lacking in reasonable hotel facilities consisting of three- to five-stars to meet the needs of tourists,” he said to reporters after the launch of the hotel here.

He said the operation of the 310-room hotel was fully managed by local workers and it played host to foreign guests mainly from Hong Kong, Taiwan, China and Japan.

Mohd Isa said the hotel’s strategic location next to Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Sabah Federal Government Administrative Centre and Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park would make it popular and well-known among the public.

“In terms of achievement, Hotel Grand Borneo won the Best Hotel award in three- and four-star category in the Sabah Tourism Award 2011,” he said.

He said the hotel industry in the country including Sabah would not be affected following the 20 sen increase in the price of RON95 and diesel from midnight last night.

He said the move by the government was ‘good and most comfortable’ in order to bear the rise in petrol prices.

Meanwhile, Mohd Isa said Hotel Grand Borneo will be managed by a subsidiary of Felda Group, Felda Travel Sdn Bhd, which owns seven hotels and resorts in Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Melaka, Perak and Felda Sahabat in Lahad Datu, Sabah.

Located about seven kilometres from Kota Kinabalu, Hotel Grand Borneo is part of 1Borneo shopping complex which draws in a big crowd.

Earlier, Mohd Isa gave appreciation to 10 Felda auxiliary police who took part in Ops Daulat to fight against the Sulu intruders in Lahad Datu early this year. — Bernama
