Foreign students flock to Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: Good quality education, safety and natural attractions in Sabah are among the main reasons why many students from China choose to study here.

Chinese students also make up the highest number of foreign undergraduates at Universiti Malaysia Sabah, according to its deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) Professor Dr Shariff Abd Kadir S Omang Haj.

Dr Shariff, who witnessed the graduation ceremony of the UMS Link Centre for Professional Development (UCPD) on Thursday, said a main reason for this was safety in Sabah. “The tourism attractions in Sabah is also one reason why parents from China like to send their children here as they get to visit the state at the same time,” he said.

The ceremony saw 166 students from China, Korea and Turkey graduating from the UCPD International Students Foundation Programme (ISPF) and 23 from its Executive Diploma Programme (EDP).

He said the ISPF is a foundation programme that was equivalent to the International English Language Test Service and Test of English as a Foreign Language recognised by other international universities.
