OSH training programmes in Sabah schools
Kota Kinabalu: Niosh Sabah will be creating awareness on Occupational Safety and Health in schools to encourage young people to apply the safety culture in order to decrease accident rates at the workplace.
Niosh Chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said Niosh wanted the awareness on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) started at school level to intensify people to be more concerned, aware and responsible on OSH.
He was speaking at the Niosh Sabah’s Hari Raya with media and clients 2014, here, Saturday.
“This is very important because even though the rate of workplace accidents has decreased by almost 50 per cent since 10 years ago, I think there are lots of space where Niosh could assist, especially in Sabah, on how we could raise the level of OSH awareness.
“So, one of the programmes that we will do is an awareness on OSH among students in school and I have asked Niosh Sabah to identify several schools here for us to carry out this programme and to let the students know more about what is safety at work.
“In the future these students will join the workforce after they graduate, so if they know about OSH early from school, it will be more easier for them to apply the safety at work culture.
“Niosh is actually preparing the young generation of today so that when they join the workforce, they will be more conscious and more aware of the importance of safety and health.
Lee also said the Hap Seng company is ready to discuss with Niosh to sponsor the OSH programme in schools and hoped other companies could come forward to help and cooperate with Niosh to conduct the programme.
According to Niosh Manager for Sabah and Labuan, Mohd Hussin Abd Salam, for this year, they will choose 10 schools in the city with one of them as the host for the programme which will be organised every year.
Meanwhile, Lee said in line with the awareness programme, they will also conduct several seminars focusing on several things, namely a seminar in relation to defensive driving and mini seminar involving various safety aspects in different fields of work.
On defensive driving, Lee said it was very important because the number of commuting accidents among workers heading from their house to work and from work to their house is increasing.
“To lessen this problem, these drivers should be educated in this special seminar where we could teach them through our experts to drive safe and be more responsible,” he said.
Lee also announced that the Borneo Occupational Safety Health conference will be organised in Kuching, Sarawak next year and that they are going to hold it alternately between Sabah and Sarawak.
