Kalimaran Fest finally fixed for every March 31

KOTA KINABALU: Pesta Kalimaran of the Muruts will be included in the Sabah calendar with the date fixed on March 31, instead of being celebrated on different dates without consistency. The festival’s Main Committee Organising Chairman Datuk Peter Anthony said it is timely for such recognition. “We found that since the Murut festival was organised in 2003, it has not been managed in a consistent manner where there is no fixed date to celebrate the festival. In the past, it was celebrated in April, or March and even in October. “The present State government is serious in upholding the dignity of all races and their respective celebrations by giving full commitment in the conservation aspect of cultural art and traditions. “This has been done with Pesta Kaamatan or Harvest Festival, Hari Raya celebration and Chinese New Year, thus, we need also to empower Pesta Kalimaran to respect the Murut ethnic group in Sabah and giving due recognition of the festival to be celebrated every March 31,” he said. Speaking after chairing the Pesta Kalimaran main committee meeting at JKR headquarters here, Peter who is also the Infrastructure Minister said the 16th celebration of the festival would begin on March 26 until March 31 at the Tenom Murut Cultural Centre.  He said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal would officiate the closing ceremony on March 31 at 1pm while the opening would be officiated by himself on March 26 at 2.30pm. “The six-day Pesta Kalimatan celebration would be joined and participated by 10 sub-ethnic Murut in various activities planned for the festival. “This festival would be celebrated in a moderate manner due to State’s funding constraints. “However, it is expected to attract about 10,000 visitors, including luring tourists to go to the interior part of Sabah in Tenom. “I have asked the management committee to take out several sport events that are seen as not suitable and focus on events and activities that reflect Murut culture and tradition,” he said. Peter who is also Melalap Assemblyman, advised visitors who wish to stay several days for the Pesta Kalimaran in Tenom to make early reservations. For more information on accommodation, they can contact the secretariat at Sabah Cultural Board at 088-258762. Source: Daily Express

Tatana showcases unique culture

KUALA PENYU: The Harvest Festival, or Kaamatan, is related to rice harvest and may have always been celebrated by the Tatana people in Kuala Penyu but many youngsters particularly those below 15 years of age may never have seen how rice is cultivated. This is because rice cultivation in the district has ceased for around 10 years, with many rice fields having been turned into residential areas or left for buffalo grazing. So when a rare showcase of paddy processing methods was shown at the inaugural Tatana Culture Carnival (Karnival Budaya Tatana) in Kampung Bundu, here, last week, many in the audience thought it was a ‘strange’ ritual. The process, known as tumutu (pounding of paddy grains to turn them into rice) was one of the competitions held during the carnival, intended to ‘educate’ the young of how their elders derived their rice from before the advent of machines. Tumutu became obsolete long before farmers abandoned rice farming. The other interesting competition was mantangon which is Tatana Folklore story telling by school children. The contestants’ mastery of the language surprised many ‘old folks’ as it was believed that Tatana language in its purest form has gone extinct as less and less people can speak it and those who do are in their twilight years. Apart from the competitions, visitors to the Carnival were able to see traditional dance performances and Tatana’s very own beauty pageant ‘Busak Mosongon’. The carnival was organised by the Sabah Tatana Cultural Association (STCA) in its attempt to preserve the ethnic group’s unique cultural traditions and language. Its president, Tan Sri Wences Angang said that they are planning to make the event an annual or at least biennial event depending on funding availability. “Since STCA was established, we managed to make Pesta Bakanjar an annual event that is listed in the state’s tourism calendar. Although bakanjar showcases the Tatana’s traditional beliefs and culture, it does not cover other traditional ways of life such as paddy cultivation and story-telling. “Through the story telling competition in this carnival, we are able to attract the interests of the young to learn the language again, and subsequently preserving it from extinction,” he told New Sabah Times. According to him, the carnival was also supported by political leaders including incumbent Beaufort Member of Parliament, Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun and incumbent Kuala Penyu Assemblyman, Datuk Limus Jury. RM20,000 for every district organising Kalimaran Festival

KENINGAU: The Sabah Murut Association (PMS) will channel an allocation of RM20,000 each to districts that organize the Kalimaran Festival this year. PMS president Datuk Rubin Balang said the allocation was obtained from Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd  Najib Tun Razak. “The allocation was channelled to PMS and distributed to the Kalimaran Festival committees in  districts organizing the festival,” he said when officiating at the festival for Sook here on Saturday. Rubin, who is also Kemabong assemblyman, said districts intending to organize the festival were welcome and PMS would channel the allocation to fund the implementation of the celebration. “For the state-level Kalimaran Festival, Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Haji Aman has approved an allocation of RM200,000 through the Sabah Cultural Board. “The organization of the festival  in every district gives the people the opportunity, especially the Murut tribe to highlight their culture and traditions as well as to promote local products,” he said. Rubin said the festival was a continuation of tradition inherited from ancestors. He said defending the culture and rights inherited from ancestors would not be wrong if it was not in conflict with government policies. Meanwhile, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Ellron Alfred Angin, thanked to the Murut community and the people in the area  for supporting  the festival in Sook. He said the festival could strengthen relationships among the Murut and other communities despite their different political affiliations. At the same time Ellron, who is also the organizing chairman, invited the Murut community to continue to support government policies, including the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister. The Sook assemblyman also called on the Murut tribe to defend the culture inherited from their ancestors, which is the identity of the race. The festival showcased cultural performances, local artist performances and local handicraft and antique exhibitions. Also present were Assistant Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Datuk Haji Sairin Karno, Pensiangan Umno Division chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Datuk Yassin, PMS deputy president Datuk Taimin Lumaing and Sabah Mamagun president Rudy Mairi Sulaiman.
