Dragon Boat Race good for tourism: Masidi

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah FCAS International Dragon Boat Race can have a positive impact on the State's tourism-related industries. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said, looking at the participation by international teams, it can bring a great number of visitors from overseas which leads to an increase in demand for accommodation, tour packages, food and dining outlets, among others. "The visitors will bring life to the tourism sector with their affordable spending power and their stay will increase the hotel occupancy rate. "They also can spend their day by visiting islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park after the Dragon Boat Race to enjoy adventurous tours to seek the proboscis monkeys as well as fireflies in the wetlands," he said during a courtesy call by FCAS president Datuk Seri TC Goh. Also present were the organising chairwoman Datuk Susan Wong and the committee members. Masidi also agreed to be the guest of honour for the race's sunset beach welcoming party at Likas Bay, on May 7. Among the activities planned for the party are the torch lighting ceremony and exciting performances, including a dragon dance, singing and dancing. Meanwhile, Goh disclosed that he is still waiting to get more participants aged below 20 to join the race this year. "The existing participants are growing in age and it is important to get more young and energised teenagers to be involved and inherit the traditional sport event – the dragon boat race, after all it is a healthy sporting event," he said. Sabah International Fishing meet April 25-30

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Anglers Association (SAA) will again be organising the annual Sabah International Fishing Tournament this year from April 25- 30. "The tournament venue will again be in Pulau Layang Layang. So far SAA has received confirmation from more than 100 participants and as in previous years, the anglers come from several countries including Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Macau, Hong Kong and China," said SAA President Datuk Wilfred Lingham. "Although the closing date for entry to Pulau Layang Layang was on March 18, the tournament is still open for anglers who want to fish in local fishing grounds such as Semarang, 'Karang-Karang', 'takat 360' and Mantanani as well as around Kudat waters. "We know that the cost to go to Pulau Layang Layang can be quite expensive. Thus by keeping registration open, anglers who want to participate but do not want to spend too much can still join in the tournament. "They can still register with SAA and depart on April 27. The closing date for them would be on April 24 at 4pm," Lingham said on Tuesday. It was learnt that the number of foreign angler participation had been increasing each year with about 60 per cent of the Layang Layang bound anglers being made up of foreign anglers, the majority hailing from China and Brunei. Similar to the previous years' tournament, anglers participating in SIFT will have to adhere to the rules and regulations set by SAA and the National Security Council. This includes fish species which are not allowed to be landed according to the Fisheries Regulations (Control of Endangered Species) Act 1999 (Amendment 2008). These include the Giant Wrasse (Ikan Mameng), all sharks, rays and bill-fishes. "If hooked they must be released immediately. For those who manage to hook a billfish, they can submit photographic proof or video of the catch as the fish must also be realised immediately in accordance to the International Game Fishing Association's (IGFA) rules." The prizes have been increased from six to 10 this year with a total of RM70,000 in cash and kind including trophies and medals. All participants will also receive a tournament T-shirt and certificate. They will also be entitled to a lucky draw which will be held during the prize presentation ceremony. The tournament would not be held without the continuous support of the Sabah Tourism Board, Sri Pelancongan Sabah and Sutera Harbour Resort Golf Marina Spa and Country Club as the venue provider, he said. "We would also like to record our gratitude to Parex Group and Davco, Pure Fishing, the State Fisheries Department, ComNav2 (Mawilla2) Operational Command Area and the Royal Malaysian Navy for their support to SAA and SIFT," he said. He added that the winning fishes will as usual be auctioned off to the public at 1pm on April 30. "Those interested to buy formalin free fish can come and participate in the auction on that day," he said, adding that this is part of SAA's effort to promote awareness about formalin free fish. Inquiries about the tournament can be directed to the SIFT 2017 secretariat at +60138509788 or +60168276762. - Neil Chan Source: Daily Express

Era fm: Full local content from April 24

Kota Kinabalu: Era fm Sabah is set to offer fully localised content next month. Astro Radio General Manager (Sabah and Sarawak) Hafizuddin Nizamuddin said this initiative is in line with Era fm Sabah's intention to solidify its position as the top radio station in the State. "Era fm Sabah was initiated in 2010 with only three hours of local programmes and since then we have expanded it to the current 13 hours of local content which made it the number one Malay language radio station in Sabah for six consecutive years. "And beginning April 24, the station will be airing full local content," he said during the launch of the Era fm Sabah announcers search campaign, here, on Tuesday. The campaign was launched by Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. According to Hafizuddin, through Era fm Sabah, listeners in both the urban and rural areas will be able to listen to local programmes and music with specific segments to showcase the local music talents. "We will be bringing a 100 per cent of local content with focus on the State's uniqueness. "And that is why we are launching the campaign to search for announcers for the morning segment. Undoubtedly, Sabah has a pool of talent which can be polished to shape our future direction. "Hence, this campaign is good opportunity for local Sabahans to try their luck, especially those who aspire to become radio announcers." The campaign will be conducted in five locations in the city and Penampang as well as Putatan and Sandakan. It will kick off at CKS Donggongon on Mar 20, before proceeding to Centre Point (Mar 21), Servay Putatan (Mar 22), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (Mar 23) and Genting Mas and Harbour Mall in Sandakan (Mar 24). Admitting that Era fm Sabah is competing with other local radio stations, Hafizuddin is confident with the station's strength as "we have our own unique target audience." "And as for the songs that will be played in our localisation programme, we will stick to the current format which is playing mainstream music." In congratulating and commending Era fm Sabah's moves of going local, Masidi hoped the radio station will also become one of the platforms to promote the tourism attractions in the State. "To date, Astro Radio has done a good job for Sabah, especially in terms of CSR projects," he said. For more information on the campaign, visit www.era.fm. - Ricardo Unt Source: Daily Express
