Hope, joy and peace at Gaya Street Xmas do

KOTA KINABALU: The city’s popular Gaya Street saw carollers spreading the message of hope, joy, peace and love at the Christmas celebration. The annual Gaya celebration, fast becoming an event of unity and harmony, saw hundreds of people flocking to watch Nativity skits and liturgical dances performed by members of the various church denominations that come under the Sabah Council of Churches (SCC). The four-day carnival that kicked off on Tuesday night highlighted among others, Nativity scenes, at Lintasan Deasoka in Gaya Street. Stalls put up by church members along the stretch of the street offered Christmas goodies and decorations, local food and drinks, clothes and knick-knacks. In his message for the launch, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said that Sabah prides itself as a melting pot of diverse races, cultures and backgrounds. “We live in harmony alongside one another and we understand each other well. The Gaya Christmas celebration showcases the unity, culture of acceptance and harmony enjoyed by the people here,” Musa said. Started eight years ago, he said the celebration also strengthened Kota Kinabalu’s image as a vibrant city. Malaysian Methodist Church chairman Bishop Dr Ong Hwai Teik said that the state government’s support for the celebration made it well known in the country and in many ways it has become an event for others to follow. It reflects openness, support and wisdom of the state government, he said. The event is organised by SCC and Kota Kinabalu City Hall, with the state government contributing RM200,000. Cosplay is a healthy art: Siringan

Kota Kinabalu: The Resource Development and Information Technology Ministry is always supportive of any community-driven activity, particularly those involving youths, arts and creativity, like cosplay. Minister Datuk Siringan Gubat said cosplay, which is relatively new in Sabah and very much a misunderstood culture, is actually a healthy performance art that involves a lot of creativity. "It takes a lot of courage to wear one of those costumes and show it to the world. On top of that, one has to be very creative in making those costumes look good on him or her," he said. "Cosplay is a healthy art, a healthy performance art, in fact. It has no gender and age bias, although participants are mostly youths. Still this is very much a misunderstood culture in our society and we need to correct this misconception, which is one of the reasons why the Ministry is supporting this activity," he said. He was officiating the Hobbycon 2013, which entered its seventh year, at the Kota Kinabalu Sport Complex in Likas, here, Saturday. His speech was read by the Ministry's Permanent Secretary, Bruno Vun. Siringan said cosplay, which is growing in popularity across the globe including in Sabah, also promotes the spirit of supporting each other irrespective of which country the cosplayers may be from. "The cosplayers should take pride in this and further enhance the cross-country collaboration. You will never know what positive things may crop up from your relationship, other than cosplaying," he said. He said another reason the Ministry supports such event is because it involves talent development, adding there are a lot of talented people taking part in the event. "They form a potential cast of actors and actresses for the State's pursuit in developing the creative content industry. Cosplayers are people who wear the costumes and act out the characters of their dream, whether it is from a movie, a video game or a comic," said Siringan. "These are all healthy and positive traits that we wish to promote and encourage. We hope more people, especially the youths, will join the community and share the passion, enjoy the spirit of camaraderie and develop a strong character and personality along the way," he added. Meanwhile, Hobbycon founder and organiser, Johan Julian Lee, said Hobbycon is slowly making a name for itself after seven years among the youths in Sabah and we are very happy to engage with the ministries and all its sponsors to make the event successful. "Youth are the forefront of the nation. They are the future generation and the talent pool of what the State of Sabah has to offer. The ministries and sponsors understand that these 'talents' will need a proper breeding ground to nurture and foster relationship with people that are like minded and, most importantly, an outlet to showcase their work of art," he said. Sabah prepares for second World Heritage Site listing

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is continuing its effort to have Danum Valley, Maliau Basin and Imbak Canyon recognized as World Heritage Sites (WHS) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco). Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said a state-level committee entrusted with the task was preparing all the required feedback and documentation required for the listing. “After it is completed the whole thing will be submitted to the relevant federal ministry in Kuala Lumpur to make the official proposal to Unesco,” he said to reporters after officiating at the launch of a book on traditional customs of ethnic communities in Sabah, at a leading hotel here, yesterday. Masidi said once the Unesco had received the official proposal, it would send its experts to make the necessary evaluation, and should they be satisfied with all the endorsement given by the relevant authorities, the sites would be listed as WHS. This would be the second WHS in Sabah after Mount Kinabalu. “It is taking some time because we are proposing simultaneously three sites and these involves collection of data which is a bit technical,” he explained. He added that all technicalities were expected to be completed soon, and more importantly they would be completed properly to make it easier for Unesco to make its decision. On another development he informed that his ministry had yet to receive any official application on the proposal to turn Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary (KKCBS) into a Ramsar Site, which will also be the second for Sabah after the Lower Kinabatangan Sanctuary. “Officially, the ministry has yet to receive any official application, although we have read about the proposal in the media. To me an expression of intention has already been made on this matter and I assume that there will be an official application – but nothing has reach to my attention so far,” he said. Masidi said it was also the hope of the ministry to see KKCBS recognized as a Ramsar Site but reminded that complying with all the conditions and requirements for such international recognition was not easy. What was important for now, he said, was for all parties involved to take the necessary initiatives to ensure that the KK Bird Sanctuary was taken care well. Source: Borneo Post
