Paint tourist boats green, white call

KOTA KINABALU: The Tourism and Culture Malaysia Ministry (Motac) Sabah branch yesterday expressed its concern over boats that were bringing tourists to islands in Semporna. Its Sabah office director, Ag Ahmad Zaki Abu Bakar, said the local authorities were equally concerned, particularly with regard to security issues. He said Semporna was booming and based on feedback received, there were between 14,000 and 18,000 China tourists per month coming to Semporna. “Motac is just taking proactive measures to catalogue the boats. We are looking at almost 140 boats owned by locals who are genuine boatmen and are in the tourism industry,” he said at the State Tourism Industry Enforcement Issues Seminar held at the Promenade Hotel yesterday. Ag Ahmad Zaki added that they had suggested that the boats be painted white and green to differentiate them from other boats. The aim of the move was not only to allow easy identification, but also hoped to boost the image of Semporna as a tourism destination. At the same time, the new identity will help the local authority in terms of security and allow them to identify which boats are legitimate in bringing tourists and which ones are not. He said the same concept was being adopted for tour vehicles. “Other people can paint them but once we catalogue them and organise them as an organisation, they will become strong and will be the ears and eyes of the government. They will want to protect their turf and would stop others pretending to be boatmen for tourists,” he said. Ag Ahmad Zaki added that the boatmen were from various villages in the area. By arranging the boatmen in such as way, he said they could also help to eliminate touts who were making huge income out of the tourism activities. “By making things more systematic, we may be able to help the boatmen increase their income,” he said. The new system is likely to be introduced and implemented this year, after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. “We have already conducted our first meeting with the local authorities, ESSCom, resort owners, local tourism players and non-governmental organisations, and they welcome the proposal,” he said. Ag Ahmad Zaki also commented on the issue of Uber drivers and said they could not carry out tour operation activities. He added those caught doing so could be charged under the 1992 Tourism Protection Act which disallows the use of unlicensed vehicles under Motac for tourism purposes. “If we catch anyone, we will fight for the maximum penalty,” he said. Present to launch the seminar attended by over 200 participants from various tourism related industries was Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Masidi Manjun. WWF applauds establishment of M’sia’s largest marine park in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: WWF-Malaysia applauds the Sabah State Government for establishing Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) off the coast of northern Borneo – protecting almost a million hectares of coral reef, mangrove, seagrass and productive fishing grounds, including more than 50 islands. TMP gazettement comes after more than 13 years of preparatory work led by Sabah Parks with government agencies, local communities, international partners, and with support from non-governmental organisations including WWF-Malaysia. TMP is a globally significant marine conservation site and WWF-Malaysia is thrilled with this monumental step! As an important marine area in the Coral Triangle, TMP has immensely rich marine biodiversity with more than 250 species of hard corals and around 360 species of fish, endangered green turtles and dugongs as well as significant primary rainforest, mangroves, and seagrass beds. However, TMP is threatened by overfishing, destructive fishing and pollution, and the declaration of its gazettement is timely and will allow for a concerted effort to address the pressures to its marine ecosystem. Executive Director/CEO of WWF-Malaysia, Dato’ Dr Dionysius Sharma, said he is deeply gratified by the declaration of TMP and congratulated the Sabah State Government, the Sabah Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment and Sabah Parks for taking the bold steps in the gazettement of TMP, paving and leading the way for the implementation of an innovative marine protected area management in Sabah and Malaysia. WWF-Malaysia also congratulates the local communities within and around TMP who can now be proud of being part of this initiative. “I feel proud of WWF-Malaysia’s role, together with other stakeholders, in supporting the Sabah State Government’s journey to gazettement of TMP. In particular, WWF-Malaysia is privileged to have been able to engage and work closely with various local community leaders and groups within TMP in building support for its establishment. Groups such as the Berungus Community, Maliangin Community, the Banggi Youth Club, Kudat Turtle Conservation Society, and the Persatuan Pemilik Kapal Nelayan Kudat (Kudat Fishing Boat Owners Association) have been strong partners in continuing to raise awareness and support for TMP,” he said. Dr Sharma acknowledged the enormity of the responsibilities that come with the management of an area as large as Tun Mustapha Park. WWF-Malaysia is committed to continue supporting the Sabah State Government in the coming years to operationalise TMP. WWF-Malaysia looks forward to continue offering technical support to Sabah Parks and working with other agencies, the private sector, local communities and other non-governmental organisations to ensure that a solid management plan is implemented to ensure the sustainable use of resources in the Park, he added. When WWF recognised the Sabah State Government with the Leaders for a Living Planet award in April 2015, Dr Marco Lambertini, Director General of WWF International said, “The gazettement of Tun Mustapha Park is a globally significant action that will boost the conservation and biodiversity of this uniquely rich natural environment. It will also do much to ensure the sustainable management of the significant marine resources in the area.” “Effective management of the Tun Mustapha Park will help ensure the viability of the area’s fisheries resources – and high quality ecotourism can provide hugely increased value, based on this natural treasure. The gazettement of this park should act as a model and an inspiration for marine conservation worldwide,” added Dr Lambertini. The establishment of TMP heralds a new way of park management in Sabah. It will be an IUCN – International Union for Conservation of Nature – Category VI Park where sustainable uses are still allowed and local communities living within it are able to continue their activities within designated zones. The productive fishing grounds in the area support more than 80,000 people in coastal and island communities, generating around 100 tonnes of fish catch each day. Tun Mustapha Park is evidence of Malaysia’s commitment to the Coral Triangle Initiative and contribution towards meeting the Aichi Biodiversity Target of at least 10% marine areas protected and managed. KDMs urged to speak their mother tongue more often

Ranau: Language usage does not determine one's thinking quality, said United Sabah Dusun Association (Usda) President Datuk Ewon Ebin. He said, any language such as English, Malay, Chinese and Kadazandusun, among others does not limit the way people think. "Even though English is recognized internationally, the thinking level of us who use Malay, Kadazandusun, Bajau, Murut and others are not confined from looking forward. "For example, the Japanese, Germans, Chinese and Koreans use their own language but they can succeed in any field," he said during the launching of Kg Kibbas and Kg Kokob Kaamatan Festival celebration. As such, Ewon urged the Kadazandusun and Murut community to use their native language to ensure the continuity of the community. "In conjunction with Kaamatan Festival being celebrated in May, we should make this month as Kadazandusun Murut language month. "I realise that most young generation are not keen on speaking their native language but I urged the community to think positively and continue using their languages. "It is left for us to preserve it and if such situation persists then it is not impossible that the Kadazandusun language will cease to exist in the next 50 years," he said. According to him, Usda is in the process of finalising a compilation of a Dusun language dictionary. During the event, Ewon also visited St Augustine's Church which was damaged due to the earthquake that hit Ranau last year and he has approved an allocation of RM17,000 to repair it. Ewon also allocated RM15,000 to purchase water tanks for villagers and another RM5,000 to build a hut for the nearby school's Parents and Teachers Association. In Kg Kokob, Ewon has allocated RM5,000 to purchase sports equipment for the village's youth as well as RM1,000 for traditional dancers from SK Libang who were selected to compete in a State level competition. He also received about 250 new membership forms for Usda from three villages, namely Kg Kokob, Kg Libang and Kg Marakau. Also present were Karanaan PBS Chief Danis Buik, Political Secretary to the Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry, Datuk Amisah Yassin, Parliamentary Liaison Chief Officer Johnny Samin and Parliamentary Special Officer Japirin Sahadi, among others.   Source : Daily Express
