History lessons via Sabah Fest

Kota Kinabalu: Behind the scene of the annual Sabah Fest, a different set of dynamics come into play where the different races and ethnics in the State get to feel a sense of belonging. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun believed that so much of this has been accomplished since the annual cultural event was first introduced. Sharing with the Daily Express recently, Masidi said he received positive response from the Chinese community last year when the musical theatre featured a love story between a Chinese merchant and a local girl in 'Agop'. "Through the Sabah Fest, we hope to educate the public about our history and the personalities who were mentioned in it. And we present all this in a way that entertains the people. But more than this, we hope that all the races in Sabah will feel a sense of belonging through this event. Last year when we introduced the love story between a Chinese merchant and a local girl, members of the Chinese community were very happy," he said. The Sabah Fest is a cultural event where ethnic groups in Sabah present their rich cultures and traditions through dance, music, fashion and food. The event is a prelude to the statewide Harvest Festival celebration and is a superbly entertaining cultural extravaganza. The musical theatre presents a wonderful blend of cultural and natural heritage that is richly embedded in folklore and one of Sabah's premiere events. This year, it features the story of the legendary freedom fighter, Mat Salleh. Masidi is aware about certain public perception even to this day concerning the historical figure who during his time was branded a menace by the British North Borneo Chartered Company but a local hero to many locals. "Some people say he's a villain, some say he's a hero. Actually the Sabah Fest is a right forum to be a medium of storytelling of our legends and myths. Over time we hope to present other legends through this event. But we want to present in such a way not to judge them but present an exciting story and let people be the judge" he said. It is for this reason that the Minister, who himself has been very much hands-on in the entire preparation of the event, had insisted to incorporate an element of love and romance in the story. "Love is a universal language that all of us can relate to," he added. The annual Sabah Fest musical theatre has featured a number of interesting historical figures of Sabah through a combination of powerful storyline, colourful display of ethnic and contemporary dances and music as well as some of the breathtaking sceneries in the State. Sabah Fest 2016 dance and musical theatre will take the stage from April 29 to May 1 at the Sabah Arts and Culture auditorium. Show starts at 8pm. Information is available on www.sabahfest.com while tickets for the stage performance are being sold at RM50. For more information, the public can contact Zachary Mobijohn at +6088 232 121 or e-mail info@sabahtourism.com. Happening at the same time, the State National Arts and Culture Department will be organising exciting side events before and after the theatre show to offer visitors an experience to remember. The department will organise cultural pocket shows in collaboration with Eastern College, Persatuan Kebudayaan and Kesenian Suara Buluh Perinduh Sabah and Tagaps Dance Theatre, a batik and contemporary ethnic costume show and a Mat Salleh exhibition at the compound area. Developing competent Sabahans for tourism sector

Kota Kinabalu: A strategic partnership has been established to develop livelihood opportunities for Sabahans, particularly in the field of retail and entrepreneurship to support the State's tourism industry. Pacific Sanctuary Holdings Sdn Bhd has signed an agreement with Gain Forlife Academy Sdn Bhd Monday to train and prepare Sabahans in retail management, entrepreneurship and other relevant skills. The partnership between the developer of the largest integrated commercial development in the city, PacifiCity, and the training academy that focuses on human capital development of locals in key trades relevant to the economic development of Sabah, promises an exciting future where the service industry is filled with people having proven retailing and wholesaling skills and hospitality management skills. The signing ceremony was witnessed by State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun who believed that the trainings provided would help produce marketable candidates in various sectors of the competitive industry. "There are many private training centres that provide tourism courses. But we still hear that their qualification is not marketable and so it's difficult for them to find a job. The main factor is that the courses did not emphasise on practical skills. We can excel in academic. But this industry calls for hands-on experience and competent skills," he said. He said the state government welcomed the partnership between the two parties to develop competent individuals in view of the rapidly growing tourism industry which, among its many developments, will see new 4-star and 5-star hotels opening this year alone. He added that having job-specific skills in the service industry will only add value to any Sabahan employees who are already known for their marketable natural sense of hospitality. In his speech, the Executive Director of Pacific Sanctuary Holdings Sdn Bhd, KP Kuok said that the key objective of PacifiCity Gain Forlife Academy, an initiative under the developer's Corporate Social Responsibility, is to produce "work place ready" candidates to serve the retail trade and hospitality sectors. He said students from the Academy would be undergoing internships with large established commercial organisations as a key part of its training curriculum. "This will mean that each graduate from this Academy will require a minimal orientation period and will be able to assume workplace responsibilities from day one of employment. In the case of conventional training systems, the gestation period for most employees could range from a minimum of 6 months to several years before they can be productive," he said. Company commercial general manager, Andrew Fairbairn, added by saying that at the early stage they had identified the shortage of trained manpower in various fields as potential roadblocks for the rapid development of Sabah. He said it was identified that there was a huge shortage of skilled personnel in the service industry hence the need for training of Sabahans to acquire essential skills in the retail and service industry. According to the Managing Director of Gain Forlife, Nelson Mosinoh, industry partners will be actively engaged in the trainings as advisers particularly on skills and knowledge that are relevant and required by the job and industry. He said the training also focuses on skills for self-employment. "That's why we immediately launch the Retailer Training Programme to develop skilled manpower to work as self-employed businessmen-retailers or as retail executives with larger local and international retailers. This programme is unique and practical. We want as many Sabahans as possible to be self-employed business people and this programme is designed to achieve this objective," he explained. He said most people assume retailing is all about waiting in a shop for customers where as in fact it involves a myriad of essential skills ranging from understanding market needs and domestic and international market trends, product selection and design, pricing points, stock management, display and presentation, cash flow management among others. He added that Academy graduates and potential retailers will have the opportunity to work with many retail partners, link with key wholesalers domestically and internationally so that the linkages in the supply chain would be more efficient and unnecessary middlemen could be cut out. He stressed that retailing and wholesaling are in fact a lucrative and rewarding profession and could be a business enterprise that lasts a long time. Source : Daily Express

RM21.04mil allocated for Chinese, mission schools in Sabah

KOTA KINABALU: The federal government handed over RM21.04 million allocation for maintenance to some 173 Chinese and mission schools in Sabah in a ceremony here. The handing over to the school representatives was done by Deputy Education Minister II Senator Chong Sin Woon, witnessed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun. "This is the 2015 allocation and at first we wanted to hand out the funding on Dec 22, but we took into consideration of the festive season and delayed it just in time before the new school semester opens in Sabah. "So the 67 Chinese primary schools (SJKC) alone are receiving RM6.49 million while RM2.55 million went to the eight Chinese conforming schools (SMJK), and the rest to the 98 mission schools. "In the larger context from 2008 since Datuk Seri Najib Razak helms (the country), SJKC alone received RM515 million and mission schools received RM465 million... So this amounted to nearly RM 1 billion allocation for these schools nationwide so far," said Wee. He said the federal government has always took account of Sabah's needs and the continuous allocation was a proof of this. Source: New Straits Times

Minister: Review English language policy in schools

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said the Federal Government should relook the national English language policy in schools. He said this was to ensure the country’s future generations were proficient in the language. “One of the biggest weaknesses in securing a good job in the private sector for workers is their poor command of English. “ I think the government needs to relook our policies. “I’m not saying the government has not done anything but we have not been consistent with the policies,” he told reporters at the Shell Malaysia Scholarship Award presentation here. Masidi said the Federal Government should take the initiative to relook as well as re-evaluate English competency among students to ensure they could have better employment prospects after graduation. Meanwhile, Shell Sabah general manager Ian Lim said the scholarship programme had been running for more than 40 years. He said Shell had invested more than RM400mil in helping over 1,500 young Malaysians. This year, Shell Malaysia would spend over RM12mil to sponsor 35 recipients. Ten scholarships were offered to students in Sabah; seven are studying at local universities, while three are overseas. — Bernama Source: The Star
