DCM: Sabah committed to develop services sector industry

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Deputy Chief Minister, Datuk Raymond Tan Shu Kiah, said the state government is committed to further develop its services sector as a main income generator. He said the services sectors, especially the knowledge-intensive and business services, were increasingly recognised as supporting the manufacturing sector and acted as levers to boost economic growth and development. Tan, who is also the state Industrial Development Minister, said the knowledge-intensive service providers today were no longer being perceived only as specialised knowledge carriers but also as connectors, technology transfer agents and problem-solvers. “The government has been actively involved in the development of the services industry in the last four decades. “The Sabah Economic Development Corp, which was set up in 1971, aims to assist the government stimulate industrial, commercial and socio-economic development of the state,” he said. Tan said this when officiating a seminar on ‘Government Initiatives to Propel the Services Sector’, organised by Malaysia Industrial Development Authority (Mida) and Sabab Industrial Development Ministry yesterday. Tan said the state government’s commitment in driving the services sector could also be seen in the implementation of the Sabah Corridor Blueprint where tourism and logistics industries had been identified as the economic drivers in Sabah. Among the programmes, he said, were to address the basic and laying tourism foundations for future growth as well as putting in place the world-class tourism infrastructure and services, including nurturing vibrant arts and culture scenes. “The other programmes were to strengthen Sabah’s position as a premier eco-adventure destination through conservation, research and sustainable development of new tourism products anchored by signature resorts,” he said. Speaking to reporters later, Tan said the abundance of about 30 million tonnes of bio-mass in Sabah and the state’s bio-diversity were other important economic potentials that needed to be developed. — Bernama Source: Borneo Post

Record RM6.35b from tourism

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah raked in higher tourism receipts of RM6.35 billion last year compared to RM5.5 billion in 2012 - mainly attributed to tourists eager to see Sabah's iconic wildlife like orang utans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants, among others. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun in announcing this, Tuesday, said this was a historic achievement for Sabah's tourism industry, where it recorded 3.3 million tourist arrivals. The figure surpassed the targets set for two years (2013 and 2014) as Masidi said the Ministry expects the number of arrivals to increase between four and five per cent or between 3.5 million and 3.6 million arrivals. "We have recorded a 17.6 per cent increase in arrivals compared to 2012. They (tourists) must have liked Sabah," he said. Domestic tourism remained a major contributor with 68 per cent of the total arrivals or 2.29 million. Overall, international arrivals recorded a growth of 15.7 per cent, mainly from China and Hong Kong (86.7 per cent up), South Korea (32.1 per cent up), Japan (25 per cent up) and Taiwan (15.5 per cent up). However, he noted the number of visitors from the United States, Australia and several other countries had declined, perhaps due to the ongoing travel advisories. Masidi said there is also a good development in the number of chartered flights into Sabah from 164 in 2012 to 262 in 2013. "I believe this is the highest number of chartered flights recorded in the country," he said. However, Masidi warned the number may drop due to shortage of hotel rooms in the State as most hotels recorded about 92 per cent occupancy rates and close to 100 per cent in peak travel periods. "We need to realise that we do not have enough rooms, unless we direct our tourists to Sandakan, which is also facing a huge problem on hotels," he said. He claimed most travel agents fear to place bookings in Sabah, as there had been instances of their clients canceling their trip to Sabah because there were no hotel rooms available. Estimating 2,000 more rooms would be needed in the city to solve the shortage, Masidi said the J.W Marriot Hotel would open by end of this year and Hilton (opposite the Bandaran Berjaya Shangrila) by 2015. Sabah hails reinstatement of 3 direct flights from KK to Tokyo

The State Government has welcomed the reinstatement of the three direct flights from Kota Kinabalu to Tokyo that augur well for Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2014. Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun also hoped that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) would also reinstate the Osaka-Kota Kinabalu route. For VMY 2014, Malaysia targeted 28 million arrivals, 600,000 of them from Japan, he said at the Malaysia Appreciation and Visit Malaysia Year 2014 Cocktail Reception and dinner at Peninsula Hotel here last Wednesday. "We seek and need your help and continuous support in order to achieve the 600,000 Japanese tourist arrivals; of which I wish to request to please bring seven per cent or 40,000 to visit Sabah," he told the Japanese tourism industry players. Also present were Datuk Shaharuddin Md Som, the Ambassador of Malaysia to Japan, Noor Azlan, Director of Tourism Malaysia in Tokyo and Datuk Irene Benggon Charuruks, General Manager of Sabah Tourism Board. "Japanese arrivals to Sabah in 2012 decreased by 17.6 per cent from 31,554 in 2011 to only 26,000 in 2012. The decline was due to Malaysia Airlines cancellations of the Tokyo and Osaka direct flights to Kota Kinabalu. "Last year (January to November 2013), Japanese arrivals increased by 27.6 per cent to 27, 992," he said, adding that for example H.I.S Travel increased their sales to Sabah by 64 per cent with a total arrival of 12,800 tourists. To make this possible, H.I.S Travel brought five chartered flights to Sabah from Fukuoka (two), Nagoya (two) and Osaka (one). JTB Travel contributed 18 per cent of Japanese arrivals increasing by 47.2 per cent to deliver 5,024 tourists in 2012 and other agents combined contributed 36.6 per cent arrivals, he added. Masidi said that over the years, Japan-Malaysia relations and friendship have grown strong and steady. Japan established its Embassy in Malaysia in 1957 and this year is the 57th Anniversary of Japan-Malaysia Friendship, coinciding with Visit Malaysia Year 2014. "Over the years, many Japanese have visited Malaysia, including the Emperor of Japan, in 2006 after the visit of the King of Malaysia, in 2005. In 2012, Japanese arrivals to Malaysia increased by 21.5 per cent to 470,000. "In the first nine months of 2013 (last year), Japanese tourist arrivals to Malaysia increased by eight per cent to 371,009," he said. Malaysia, especially Sabah, he said was a country renowned for its travel-friendly destination with an inexhaustible list of fascinating destinations and experiences. "As a truly value-for-money holiday destination, Sabah promises a perfect escape for tourists," he said. Meanwhile, Shaharuddin said the Visit Malaysia Year 2014 was the latest and biggest tourism campaign by the Malaysia Government which will be held throughout the year ranging from dazzling parades, colourful cultural shows, fabulous food festivals, exciting sports, music and art festival to shopping extravaganza. "The success of the VMY 2014 is dependent among others, on the continuous support and cooperation that we receive from the travel trade fraternity including the media and airline and in this regard, we are fortunate to have such an excellent working relationship with the travel trade fraternity in Japan," said Shaharuddin. During his four-day official visit to Japan, Masidi also met with the top guns of two biggest travel agencies in Japan namely Akira Hirabayshi, President of H.I.S Travel and Hiromi Tagawa, President of JTB Travel. He also met with Roslan Ismail, Regional Vice President (North Asia & America) of Malaysia Airlines. Source: Daily Express
