KOTA KINABALU: Airline companies and tourism key players should make concerted efforts to promote Sabah and attract more tourists from the international markets of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, India and China.
Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai in making this call when launching the MasWings 1 million Seat for Sale campaign, said industry players should work hand in hand, through regular networking and partnerships to come up with innovative products and packages to promote the State.
The Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had also announced a special fund for tourism development amounting to RM2 billion in the national 2014 budget, which tourism players should take full advantage.
Meanwhile on the event, Joniston said such promotions and campaigns would draw in new and repeat travellers to the State.
"As a nature destination, the State heavily depends on air transportation to Sandakan, Tawau and Lahad Datu which are gateways to our rich natural resources and attractions.
“As of September this year, we received more than 800,000 foreign and more than 1.6 million domestic visitors so that shows we are well on our way to achieving our target of 3 million visitors.
"We also aim to get a fair share of tourist arrivals into the country under Visit Malaysia 2014,” said Joniston.
The 1MSOS campaign saw the community airline offering one million seats at discounts from as low as RM30 for all domestic destinations. The seats are available for sale from yesterday until March 31, 2014, for travel from January 1 until December 1, 2014.
MASwings chief executive officer Captain Mohd Nawawi Awang said that the campaign was the company's way of showing its gratitude to its loyal customers and enhancing the airline’s visibility within East Malaysia and the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) region.
“This year-long campaign is also aimed at attracting new guests from Peninsular Malaysia and promoting social integration which is one of the main reasons why this airline was formed six years ago," he added.
On the company's plan to fly to Puerto Princessa in Palawan Island, Philippines, he said they hoped to start operating the route from here on Tuesday.
"We expect the three times weekly operation to lure more visitors to Sabah directly and to other destinations nationwide indirectly,” Mohd Nawawi said in a speech delivered by MASwings chief commercial officer Shauqi Ahmad.
Shauqi said the airlines would not mount flights to places that would compromise their passengers’ safety, citing the recent upheavel caused by Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
"Safety and security matters are paramount for the airline. We make all attempts to avoid dangerous situations by consistently communicating with authorities, such as the Meteorology Department, to revise our schedules and operations," he added.
