Sabah Rural Development Ministry plans rural tourism initiatives through Mini Estet Sejahtera

KOTA KINABALU: The state Rural Development Ministry plans to further develop rural tourism through the Mini Estet Sejahtera (Mesej) project, starting with Kadamaian, located in the Kota Belud district. Minister Ewon Benedick who is Kadamaian assemblyman, said Kampung Sayap would be pioneering the pilot programme, starting with SK Sayap through its edu-tourism programme in welcoming visitors including international tourists. “The school initiative would enhance the knowledge of students in tourism industry and generates fund for the school. “I had launched the edu-tourism programme at SK Sayap in 2016 before becoming an assemblyman. “The school has an upside-down hut as an attraction in its edu-tourism park. I hope more schools would emulate such ideas and find activities to generate economic returns for the school fund. “Today, Kampung Sayap being identified as the pilot group for the rural tourism Mesej is another example of my commitment to continue supporting them,” he said after receiving a courtesy call from the SK Sayap Edu-Tourism main committee and the village tourism main committee at his ministry’s office here. He said the new programme would be conducted in collaboration with Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry through Sabah Tourism Board. Meanwhile the school’s edu-tourism coordinator Boniface Jiran said they welcomed such efforts to incorporate the new Mesej concept in the village, which would in turn bring positive impacts to Kampung Sayap, such as improvement of road links there. “The edu-tourism approach also helped improved the students’ academic performances, where they all have achieved the basic ability for reading, writing, counting and reasoning. “At the same time, it also increased their confidence as they could communicate in English with foreign tourists as we had visitors from Japan and England coming to the school,” he added. Ukraine to learn from Sabah’s eco-tourism

Penampang: Ukraine wants to learn from Sabah's best practices in developing its eco-tourism products and attracting foreign tourists in huge numbers. Being a country known for its Unesco World Heritage Sites, Ukraine aims to take its tourism industry to greater heights and believes it is possible by learning how Sabah has done it. "This is one area that we can learn from Sabah because it has been very successful in attracting foreign tourists," said the country's Ambassador to Malaysia, Olexander Nechytaylo. He is currently in the State with his wife, Triana, to experience the State level Harvest Festival celebration at Hongkod Koisaan for the first time. The couple attended both the opening and closing ceremonies of the annual celebration. He is also scheduled to meet Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. "Our country looks forward to building a new chapter of relationship with the State Government. For me, I look forward to meeting the new Chief Minister to congratulate him on his appointment," said Nechytaylo, who made his first visit to the State last year. He believes that the relationship between Ukraine and Malaysia will be further strengthened under the leadership of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. "Mahathir made an official visit to Ukraine in July 2003. So, we look forward to continuing this friendly relationship," he said. Diplomatic relations between the two countries was established on March 3, 1992, and Malaysia was among the first countries to recognise the independence of Ukraine. He pointed out that Malaysia is fast becoming one of the countries that more Ukranians would want to visit, with the numbers growing between 10 to 15 per cent in recent years. Last year, he said more than 15,000 of his countrymen visited Malaysia. At the same time, he hopes more Malaysians would visit Ukraine, an East European country, which offers many exciting places. "During the recent European Championship final held in Kiev, we had a group of 50 Malaysian soccer fans coming to see the match. Most of them were Liverpool supporters," he said. Other than tourism, Nechytaylo also hopes to see a revival of cooperation in the area of education. In a previous interview with him, Nechytaylo had said that Ukraine has so much to offer, particularly in the fields of engineering, aerospace, medical science and Information Technology. He said Ukraine was part of the Bologna Process, which is a series of ministerial meetings and agreements between European countries to ensure comparability in the standards and quality of higher-education qualifications. - Leonard Alaza Source: Daily Express

Kota Belud: The State Rural Development Ministry plans to introduce rubber-based road construction technology in Sabah. Its Minister Ewon Benedict said the technology has been applied and used in other countries, including Thailand, which is very suitable for building roads in rural and interior areas. "We can introduce and develop the technology in Sabah because it is one of the best methods to build roads in the rural areas. "Apart from that, it can also increase the rubber price because we are inventing a technology to build roads using rubber. "There is a domestic need in road construction using rubber technology," said Ewon, who is also Kadamaian Assemblyman, at a thanksgiving ceremony at SK Kiau 1, here, Sunday. In another development, he said the ministry has drawn up various proposals or programmes to be carried out in the rural areas, including developing the tourism industry in Kadamaian. "In fact, there are many programmes that we can implement in all villages in Sabah. "I am also open to suggestions and inputs from all quarters, including local communities and grassroots, which are feasible and can be implemented in their respective areas. "The suggestions must have long-term benefit either in terms of its administration, system or resolving certain problems, so that we can compete with other communities at the international level," he said. On meeting the grassroots, Ewon said he would launch an office of his Adun (State Assemblyman) service centre at Kg Piasau here to take up complaints and issues faced by the people in his constituency. On repairing village roads and other facilities in the rural areas, he said implementation would be based on priority and need of the villagers. However, he said, the bigger roads in the rural areas would be under the jurisdiction of the Public Works Department (PWD) and discussions would be held with the department to repair the roads. Christina, who is also the state’s Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, said the market concept will introduce the various cultures and she will discuss the matter with the district municipal council’s president soon. “At the same time I am going to meet up with tourism operators around the state to see if Sabah as a whole can be made as a tourism venue,” she added.
