WAGC 2019 to begin on Oct 19 in Sabah

PETALING JAYA: The World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) 2019 will be held in Sabah from Oct 19-26. This will be the 25th edition of the largest and most popular amateur golfers tournament in the world, with with over 40 countries registered in this year’s tournament, organised by Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays Sdn Bhd. For the eighth year running, Perodua will be the title sponsors and the competition will be played at four golf courses in Sabah, the Sutera Harbour Marina Golf & Country Club, the Sabah Golf & Country Club, the Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club and the Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai. With the tagline Fascinating BORNEO - ‘The Land Below the Wind’, other agencies such as Tourism Malaysia, Sabah Tourism Board and many other sponsors and stakeholders will be playing a vital role to ensure the success of the 2019 World Final in Kota Kinabalu. Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Christina Liew who was present at the launch of the event said her Ministry has been actively promoting tourism in Sabah, and recognised the importance of golf in attracting visitors and investors to the state. “We are calling on everyone in Sabah to roll out the red carpet to welcome the national teams of WAGC and their entourages. Staging this world golf championship in Sabah has also received national support. Such a major tournament was made possible through sponsorships, particularly by Perodua, and the joint support by Sabah Tourism Sabah and Tourism Malaysia “I understand many officials of these two bodies will be playing pivotal roles in coordination, as cooperation from many government agencies are needed to ensure the WAGC runs smoothly in Sabah. It is also imperative that our local golfing fraternity rally together and make WAGC 2019 a golf tournament that many Malaysians, particularly Sabahans, can long remember and be proud of,” she said. Sabah hosts WAGC Final 2019

KOTA KINABALU, 12 March 2019: Amateur golfers from around the world will head for Sabah, Malaysia this October to play in the 25th World Amateur Golfers Championship. WAGC’s World Final 2019 Borneo Malaysia will take place 19 to 26 October in Kota Kinabalu. It includes the finals with players representing up to 40 countries and an invitational tournament. Play will unfold at four of the state’s top competition golf courses; Sutera Harbour Marina Golf and Country Club; Sabah Golf and Country Club; Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai and Dalit Bay Golf and Country Club. The 500-room Pacific Sutera Hotel in Kota Kinabalu features 500 rooms and one of the golf courses played in the tournament is the official hotel partner. Tourism Malaysia is the main sponsor along with Perodua as the title sponsor. The tournament will be organised by Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays. World Golfers Championship Ltd the owner of WAGC signed long-term agreement with Delta Trend Golf & Travel, last year to contract host countries for World Finals, secure sponsors and together with local companies manage, plan and stage the World Finals. Winners of national tournaments that cover multiple rounds are shortlisted to play for their countries to play in the World Final 2019. Around 40 national teams from across the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania will compete in the Finals. Tourism Malaysia chairm, Datuk Ahmad Shah Hussein Tambakau, told a press conference last week the prestigious tournament would underscore Sabah’s position as a top golf destination. “Although the championship will be held in Sabah, it is also a national effort. Such a major tournament was only made possible through sponsorship by our second car manufacturer Perodua and the support of Tourism Malaysia with officials playing a pivotal role in coordination as cooperation from many government agencies are needed to ensure the championship runs smoothly,” he added. Team Malaysia won the WAGC crown in 2012 and 2015, and came in second runners-up in 2016 and last year. Four Sabah golf courses in the world spotlight from Oct 19-26

KOTA KINABALU: This year’s World Amateur Golfers Championship (WAGC) will be played at four major golf courses in Sabah, from Oct 19-26. They are Sutera Harbour Marina Golf & Country Club, Sabah Golf & Country Club, Nexus Golf Resort Karambunai and Dalit Bay Golf & Country Club. Golfers contesting in the WAGC represent their countries after emerging as winners of national tournaments. The World Amateur Golfers Invitational (WAGI), a separate tournament for invited VIPs, business leaders and corporate sponsors, will also be played alongside the WAGC. WAGC 2019 is organised by Delta Trend Golf & Leisure Holidays, the official partner and licensee for Malaysia. It has been organising the qualifying rounds and national tournaments in Malaysia for the 8th consecutive year, and the WAGC Finals in Malaysia for three successive years from 2017-2019.
