30mil tourists target by 2020

Langkawi: Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi said the hotel sector in Malaysia is growing at a rate of 8.5 per cent with 250 new hotels having opened last year. "We are pleased that brands such as Weston, Mercure, Sheraton, W. St Regis, Four Season, Hyatt and others see the value of Malaysia for their business expansion and investments," he said, adding that last year the country also welcomed a total of 25.9 million tourists with RM2.2 billion in receipts. "We are looking at attracting 30 million tourists by 2020 considering the country's favourable exchange rate and being a value-for-money destination." He also stressed that Malaysia's hotel rates and prices of food and beverages and other holiday lifestyle choices are among the lowest but highest in quality. "Furthermore, upcoming attraction developments such as Desaru Coast in Johor, Impression City Melaka and 20th Century Fox World Theme Park in Genting Highlands, when completed, will be the fresh and latest attractions in Malaysia," he said. He said Malaysia makes the ideal destination for MICE and business events as well as caters for honeymoon and wedding celebrations. Our country, he added, is a wonderful choice as a filming location. "It would interest you to know that the box office Hollywood hit last month, "Crazy Rich Asians", was actually filmed mostly in Malaysia at places such as Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi." On the PATA Travel Mart event, Mohamaddin said he is pleased to see the overwhelming response and participation from delegates from all over the world. This year, he said the country recorded a total of 212 organisations as international sellers from 34 destinations, including China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Nepal, Singapore, Thailand and others. On the part of Malaysia, Mohamaddin said the country is taking part in the event in a big way with some 67 sellers comprising state tourism boards from Johor, Kesha, Labuan, Penang, Selangor, Sabah and Sarawak. - Nikko Fabian   Source: Daily Express

Hotel staff show artistic talents

SANDAKAN: Associates of The Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan initiated a drawing competition to commemorate the 61st Malaysian Independence Day. The theme, which is based on this year’s theme ‘Sayangi Malaysia Ku’ received an overwhelming response and the three external judges, Roslee Jaafar (professional art and culture), Emilina Gustin (head of dental unit) and Eva Mohamad (Zumba instructor and teacher), were captivated by the final products of the talented staff. Roslee complimented the hotel’s general manager, Peter Padman, for having such a motivated and joyful team of employees while commenting that he was in awe of the 10 final artworks which expressed so much detail and love by the associates for their much adored country, Malaysia. When asked why this drawing competition was organised, Peter said that his team had been working so hard over the past few months with so many new implementations within the company, and with the ongoing integration of Marriott International with Starwood, he felt that his fellow colleagues could do with a break from the daily routine which had somewhat been quite stressful lately. He added that the associates, who were a team of Malaysians, expressed so much passion and love for their country through the drawings and it was brought to reality that a picture does paint a thousand words. The competition, which was open to all 10 departments of the hotel, was won by the Human Resources Department, led by Haeruddin Nurdin, the Human Resources Manager. Their painting represented the various cultural and ethnic groups of the country who live in perfect harmony from the North to the South, from Perlis to Sabah. The various colours were explained in detail as to what it represented, while not forgetting the meaning of the Hibiscus as the National flower and the iconic KLCC tower that showed the progress and development of the country over the 61 years.   Source: Borneo Post Online

Kuala Penyu to be top attraction

KUALA PENYU: The Central Board has approved a four-star hotel and a five-star hotel with about 800 rooms combined to be built in Kuala Penyu. Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Pang Yuk Ming said Kuala Penyu would undergo major transformation in a year or so. “At present, the proposal to build four-star and five-star hotels have been approved by the Central Board. “In time to come, more hotels and resorts will be coming up in Kuala Penyu,” Pang said at the groundbreaking ceremony of Wong Tai Sin Temple, Sabah here yesterday. He said Kuala Penyu was poised to become one of the main tourism destinations in Sabah in the next five years with the establishment of the famous Wong Tai Sin Temple here. Pang believed that tourists from around the world, especially those from China, would flock to the Wong Tai Sin Temple in Kuala Penyu to receive blessings. “I hope everyone will do their part in making sure that the temple is erected in the 1.5 to two years in order to spur the economy of Kuala Penyu,” he said. Pang said the establishment of the temple was a historical moment for Sabah as this would be the third Wong Tai Sin Temple outside Hong Kong, after Macau and Vancouver. “The Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong is a popular tourism destination with 6 million visitors recorded a year. “Each year, the temple receives donations amounting to HKD500 million. “I believe the Wong Tai Sim Temple here will enhance the tourism products of Kuala Penyu.” On behalf of the people of Sabah and Kuala Penyu, he thanked Dr Lee Yiu Fai, Monastic Supervisor of Sik Sik Yuen Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong, for giving his approval and blessing to build the temple during the latter’s visit to the district a few months ago. Pang also thanked Kuala Penyu Assemblyman Datuk Limus Jury for having the wisdom and taking the initiative and effort in making the temple a reality, as well as the government for approving the project. Limus, a Dusun whose religion is Buddhism, has donated five acres of land for the purpose of building the temple. “Limus, you will always be remembered fondly by the Chinese community as well as the people of Sabah and Kuala Penyu in many years to come for putting a monumental landmark in Kuala Penyu.” He said the temple’s modern design that resembled a turtle was also Limus’ request. “To the Chinese, turtle is a symbol of longevity and stability. “I hope the Wong Tai Sin Temple will bring not only peace, tourists and development to the district, but more importantly, longevity to the people of Sabah and Kuala Penyu.” Meanwhile, Limus said visitors who come for the Wong Tai Sin Temple here would spur the economy of the local community. He said the district would greatly benefit if the temple could attract half or even a million of the 6 million visitors who went to the Wong Tai Sin Temple, Hong Kong annually. He also spoke positively of the charity work to assist the underprivileged people that was carried out by Wong Tai Sin Temple in Hong Kong using the donations they collected.
